A tower made of words, on the South Side ground that held the 1893 fair.
The Obama Presidential Center's museum tower, seen from the ground and leaning into a hard blue sky. Its two faces are cut through with words, We the People, Yes We Can, improve this great nation of ours, the way the real building carries a passage from the Selma speech high on its stone; a single orange door burns at the base.
Jackson Park is Olmsted's: he and Calvert Vaux laid it out in 1871, the World's Columbian Exposition filled it in 1893, and the Center now rises 225 feet over the same South Side ground.
