I AM A MAN

"I AM A MAN” was the declaration carried by Black sanitation workers during the 1968 Memphis strike. These men worked dangerous jobs for low wages and were routinely treated without dignity. The strike began after sanitation workers Echol Cole and Robert Walker were killed by a malfunctioning garbage truck. The workers demanded safer conditions, fair pay, union recognition, and the basic right to be treated as men
