Uptown Theatre
Four signs, one block: the marquees that light up Uptown after dark.
The signs of Broadway and Lawrence, stacked the way they crowd the corner: the Aragon's vertical blade of pink neon, the Uptown's great red marquee, the Riviera in script, and the Green Mill's cocktail lounge in green, every one of them ringed in bulbs.
The Uptown Theatre opened in 1925 with 4,381 seats, the most in Chicago, and has been dark since 1981; its marquee is still the most beautiful thing on the street. The Aragon Ballroom next door dances under a painted night sky, the Riviera has run for over a century, and the Green Mill has been open since 1907.
